Métis Rose II
Lisa Shepherd and Kristi Bridgeman
Métis Rose II is inspired by the history and ancestral journey of our Metis Grandmothers. It connects us back in time, to our beginnings. The land is represented by native wildflowers on a foundation of smokey moose hide. It is lovingly supported by the outer-most zigzagged border of our Haudenasaunee great grandmothers. Traveling inwards is the story of our art that marks our place in time. The journey continues with harvested porcupine quills in the four directions. Embroidery stitches around the wheel tell of the arrival of the Europeans and the stitch work taught to us by the Ursaline Nuns. These floral designs carried on with the arrival of trades beads, identifying us as the Flower Beadwork People. In the centre is the beaded Rose, representing the Métis women of today.
Endemic flowers clockwise: yellow mountain columbine, red wood lily, blue alpine gentian, and pale white and pink spring beauty.
Mixed media: sepia ink, watercolour, Moose hide, glass beads.
Printed locally on FSC paper.
