Water & Sustenance
Kristi Bridgeman & Lisa Shepherd
Water & Sustenance shows the whitefish in its many stages. In eastern doorway the whitefish begins its life as eggs laid amoungst the pebbles of shallow water- becoming sac fry carrying their food source below them on their belly, then as larvae to juvenile moving in to deeper waters, and on to the adult phase feeding near the bottom of lakes and streams, spawning, and moving on to the northern doorway- to become food for the shrimp, crustaceans and becoming part of the greater intricately balanced food chain.
The whitefish give their life in order to sustain ours, by providing nourishment as a food source. We show our respect and gratitude by making use of their iridescent scales, bones and vertebrae in our traditional fish scale art.
Medium; Ink, watercolour, Beeswax sgraffito, acrylic. Hand dyed fish scales with glass beads on hide.
